There Will Be Blood
Topic: Decline of the West

Even more blood, to be precise. Heaven alone knows how many people have already been killed in the revolt against the murderous dictator of Libya, Colonel Muammer Qaddafi. But whatever the number, I’m afraid it’s only a down payment on the butcher's bill for ridding Libya and the world of one of its most repulsive occupants.

For his part, Qaddafi appears determined to go down swinging. Perhaps recognizing that there’s no plausible refuge for him beyond his own country’s borders, the dictator is mobilizing his supporters for a last desperate battle. And though it may be difficult for many in America and Western Europe to grasp, Qaddafi has supporters enough to make a fight of it. Some are the accomplices of his crimes, who know that summary punishment awaits them if the tyrant falls. Others are his tribal comrades. Still others—including the African mercenaries he has imported—are simply in it for the money. Together, these cohorts of supporters command enough military power to guarantee a bloodbath.

Of course, a bloodbath could be averted if the so-called international community would only bestir itself. America and Western Europe together possess sufficient military power to tip the balance decisively against Qaddafi at a far smaller cost in human lives. But what am I thinking? The international community is, as always, quite incapable of decisive action. Today, economic sanctions were imposed on the Qaddafi regime. Oh, and it appears possible that Libya will lose its seat on the UN Human Rights Council! Could there be a greater insult to the Libyan people at this moment of their nation’s greatest trial?

I’d be willing to entertain the argument that Realpolitik dictates against intervention in Libya. But I just can’t stand the pious hypocrisy of people like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, the denizens of the UN, the mandarins of the EU and the rest of that crew, gathered in Geneva to tut-tut over Colonel Qaddafi’s unacceptable behavior. Either do something, ladies and gentlemen, or just shut up!

It's Not Fair!
Topic: Decline of the West

Speaking of Wisconsin, various people have suggested to me that what Governor Walker is proposing to do about public employee unions—eliminating some collective bargaining rights, making payment of union dues voluntary, requiring annual membership recertification of union representation—isn’t “fair.” Why should workers have rights taken away from them just because they work for the state?

Well, all right, it probably isn’t fair. But fairness is not the issue. In fact, it’s irrelevant. The status quo is driving states like Wisconsin closer and closer to bankruptcy. Some states, indeed—think California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York—are already broke. Public employee unions, in collusion with vote-greedy politicians, have devoured all available state revenue. So things are going to change because they have to change. Medical benefits are going to be cut back, pension plans are going to be trimmed, work rules are going to be reformed. Unfair? Sure. But as John F. Kennedy once remarked, life is unfair.

Why the Sudden Silence?
Topic: Decline of the West

You may have noticed that after butting into the Wisconsin budget crisis with the suggestion that Governor Scott Walker’s attempt to strip is state’s public employees of most collective bargaining rights looked like union busting, His Puissant Majesty…excuse me, President Obama…suddenly shut up. Why was that?  Perhaps because someone reminded him that federal employees have no collective bargaining rights at all. Duh.

Because in one week she’ll be home in Mishawaka. Hard to believe but true: PFC Gregg has been in Afghanistan for almost six months now. I think we can all agree that our soldier has earned her mid-deployment leave. See you soon, Lexi!

Somewhere Our Union's Punching
Topic: Liberal Fascism

Anyone who still supports the knuckle-dragging goonocracy known as "organized labor" should take a peek at this video. In it, some thug wearing a Communications Workers of America shirt assaults a young lady named Tabitha Hale, a Tea Party activist who works for the Washington DC-based conservative Group FreedomWorks.

So the next time you see a girl with a black eye, you might look for the union label. Stay classy, CWA.

Religion of Peace Update
Topic: Decline of the West

Egypt is home to the Mideast’s largest religious minority: Coptic Christians. I’m sure you can guess how the country’s Muslim majority regards these people. If not, you could always ask Father Daoud Botrous, a Coptic priest. No, wait, you can’t ask him, because he was recently stabbed to death and beheaded by a gang of masked killers who shouted “‘Allahu akbar!” (God is great) as they went about their work. In Egypt, this sort of thing is not at all uncommon—ask any Copt.

Widespread harassment of women, rising frequently to the level of violent rape, systemic persecution of a religious minority—and Western pundits are still talking about the prospects for democracy in Egypt? In the words of a corrupt but colorful former congressman, “Beam me up, Scotty!”

Afghanistan Update
Topic: Freedom's Guardian

The 511th MP Company has been under a communications blackout for the past week, so we haven't heard much from PFC Gregg. She was able to contact her mother yesterday via text messaging. She said that the 511th is busy but that things are fairly quiet now that the excitement over the recent Kandahar bomb attack has died down.

Fewer than two weeks now until Lexi's home on leave. We're all looking forward to the day!

Unions? What Unions. . .?
Topic: Decline of the West

And speaking of Our Great and Glorious Supreme Commander…excuse me, President Obama…it appears that after sticking his toe into the roiled waters of the battle between the unions and state governments, he has become a prey to second thoughts.

Governors in states where the unions have been stripping taxpayers to the skin are no doubt glad to see Obama butt out. Some Democrats and union leaders seem relieved that he’s running for cover. Others argue that he ought not to turn his back on a key segment of the Democratic Party base at a moment of high crisis. As usual, by making a rash move and then falling into a sudden funk, Obama has muddied his image without producing results. What a jerk.

How Progressives Mind Their Manners
Topic: Liberal Fascism

The next time I hear some smarmy progressive nosebleed whining about the lack of civility in American public life (a complaint to be understood as an attack on conservatives), a one-word response will suffice: Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin and elsewhere, progressivism has bared its ugly face. Union goons—acting on behalf of teachers!—are engaged in a campaign of threats and intimidation against the Republican governor and the Republican majority in the state legislature. (Typical protests sign message in Madison: "Scott Walker: The Reason We Need Planned Parenthood." Walker is the new GOP governor of Wisconsin.) And why are they doing this? To protect their members’ unjustifiable, gold-plated benefits packages, which happen to be bankrupting the state. It’s a thoroughly disgusting spectacle, not least because the President of the United States is supporting these union thugs in their vicious attacks on Wisconsin’s duly elected officials. No class, no conscience—that just about sums up Barack Obama and the political faction he represents.

The City and the Man Have Met
Topic: Liberal Fascism

Fresh from a less-than-triumphal tour of duty as our Maxim Leader’s…excuse me, President Obama’s…chief of staff, Rahm Effing Emanuel has been elected Mayor of Chicago. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer municipality.

Over the six years of my residence in Chicago, I’ve come to cordially detest the Windy City. From its rapacious tax regime and moribund economy to the racial spoils system that dominates its politics, Chicago exemplifies everything that’s sick, corrupt and decadent about contemporary American civic culture. What else to make of a city where such repulsive characters as the Rev. J. White and Minister Louis Farrikan are honored citizens?

Chicago suffered a shock to its puffed-up pride when the 2010 census revealed that the city’s population has sunk to its lowest level since 1920. What was even more eye-opening than the overall decline, however, was the demographic makeup of the group that split. The majority were black—this in a city where politicians pander endlessly to the black vote. During his campaign, Emanuel even came out in favor of slavery reperations. Despite all this belly crawling before the idol of racial politics, blacks in Chicago are the chief victims of all the city’s economic and social ills. It’s no surprise to me that so many of them have been voting with their feet.

Having symbolically tongue-polished the wingtips of the Chicago establishment, Emanuel will find himself ill positioned to tackle this city’s problems as mayor. The outgoing mayor, Richie Daley, did manage to maintain a certain stability, but only at the price of all possibilities for reform and renewal. After him, the deluge. I don’t feel sorry for Chicago—its people have freely chosen their fate. And I positively look forward to Rahm Emanuel’s discomfiture. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving politician.
