REPUBLIC OF KENYA

CURRENT MILITARY & NAVAL FLAGS & ENSIGNS

Kenya achieved independence as a British dominion in 1963 and a year later the country became a republic. The current national flag was adopted in 1963; the naval and military flags  adopted from 1964 onward resemble their British equivalents. Originally the flag of the Army was maroon with the badge of the seervice centered; later thias was replaced by the version shown below. The naval commissioning pennant is horizontally striped with the national colors white omitted).
One peculiarity of the Kenya armed forces is that its naval branch uses Army rank titles. Thus the Commander of the Navy is not a rear-admiral but a major-general; the Deputy Commander is not a commodore but a brigadier. However, Kenyan naval officers wear naval-style uniforms. The Air Force also employs Army rank titles.
Flag Proportions: The naval ensign and naval command flags have 1:2 proportions; other flags have 2:3 proportions.
