CURRENT ARMY & AIR FORCE FLAGS

The Norwegian Army and Air Force have flags and ceremonial standards displaying their badges on a field of their distinguishing color. The rank flags of the two services are similar to those of the Navy, but with yellow instead of white stars. The chiefs of the service branches (titled inspectors-general until 2017) have appointment flags with a distinctive badge in the canton. That of the Chief of the Army's flag displays crossed batons. The flag of the Chief of the Air Force displays a representation of the Air Force flight wings.
The Home Guard is Norway's territorial military reserve force. Its members keep their arms and ammunition in their homes; this reflects Norway's bitter experience during World War II, when Germany's lighting invasion in the spring of 1940 overran much of the country before the Army could be fully mobilized. The force's badge appears in the the canton of the flag of the Chief of the Home Guard. The Home Guard does not have a distinguishing flag but it does, like the Army and Air Force, have a ceremonial standard. General officers of the Home Guard use the Army/Air Force pattern rank flags.
Also illustrated on this page are the flags of the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the Defense Staff.
