CURRENT ARMY & AIR FORCE RANK FLAGS

Notes

The rank flags of the Norwegian Army and Air Force are similar to those of the Navy, but with yellow instead of white stars. The Inspector-General of the Army's flag is identical to that of his Navy counterpart, except that the crossed batons are yellow instead of white. The flag of the Inspector-General of the Air Force has the Air Force badge in the canton.

The Home Guard is Norway's territorial military reserve force. Its members keep their arms and ammunition in their homes; this reflects Norway's bitter experience during World War II, when Germany's lighting invasion in the spring of 1940 overran much of the country before the Army could be fully mobilized. The force's badge appears in the the canton of the flag of the Inspector-General of the Home Guard.

Also illustrated on this page are the flags of the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the Defense Staff.
