CURRENT NAVAL ENSIGNS & FLAGS

After the revolution of 1989 that brought down the communist regime, the plain blue-yellow-red tricolor was restored as Romania's national flag and naval ensign. Because of the similarity of the Romanian tricolor to the national flag of Chad, there have been proposals to modify it by placing the state arms on the yellow stripe. So far, however, such proposals have been rejected. In practice the Romanian flag is unlikely to be mistaken for that of Chad, a remote African country.

All current Romanian naval flags and pennants are based on the national flag. The appointment flags of the President, Minister of Defense and Chief of the Defense Staff are similar to the square naval rank flags used up to 1940. The modern Romanian Navy, however, does not employ rank flags. Instead, a range of appointment flags denoting position or command level has been adopted. From 1989 to 1998 the naval jack was similar to the naval appointment flags, but with a vertical foul anchor in the fly. The current jack is similar to the old naval commander-in-chief's flag, which had crossed anchors under two white stars.

Flag Proportions: The national flag/naval ensign and naval rank flags have 2:3 proportions. The jack and position flags are square.
