REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

MILITARY & NAVAL FLAGS & ENSIGNS

Since 2003

Notes

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) adopted new flags in 2003. They follow the basic design of previous flags, but with new branch insignia replacing those inherited from the era of white minority rule. The nine-pointed star representing South Africa's nine provinces is common to all flags, with specific branch insignia inside the star. New flags have also been introduced for the Joint Special Operations Command, Defense Intelligence, and Defense Support.

The rank flags for Air Force commanders have probably been updated also, though this has not yet been confirmed. The naval ensign and naval rank flags have not been changed but since the Navy has now been granted a new badge, the 1994-2003 Naval Color has probably been abolished or changed. The SA national flag continues in service as the naval jack.

Flag Proportions: These new SA military flags and ensigns have 2:3 proportions.
