UNITED STATES AIR FORCE

ORGANIZATIONAL FLAGS & GUIDONS

Notes

US Air Force units above the squadron level (groups, wings, air divisions, numbered air forces, major commands and certain operating agencies) are authorized organizational flags of a standard pattern based on the design of the US Air Force Ceremonial Departmental Flag. The authorized emblem of the organization, with the USAF crest, replaces the USAF coat of arms. Dimensions are 3 feet at the hoist by 4 feet on the fly, plus 2 1/2-inch yellow fringe. Unit decoration and campaign streamers, if authorized, are always displayed with these flags.

USAF squadrons are authorized guidons. In all cases, the field of the guidon is ultramarine blue with the USAF crest, numerals and letters in golden yellow. The designation of the squadron's parent unit (group or wing) appears above the crest, while the squadron designation appears below the crest. If parent unit and squadron bear the same number, only the type designation, e.g. ARS (air refueling squadron) appears below the crest. Dimensions for guidons are 20 inches at the hoist by 27 inches on the fly with a 10-inch fork. USAF guidons are now made of heavyweight rayon banner cloth, though the previous wool bunting types, if serviceable, may still be used.
