DIVISION ARTILLERY, 1st INFANTRY DIVISION (MECHANIZED)
Cold War Organization    1988

The Division Artillery (DIVARTY) of the 1st Infantry Division consisted of a headquarters battery, three FA battalions equipped with 155mm self-propelled howitzers, a separate FA battery equipped with the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and a target acquisition battery (TAB). Each howitzer battalion was in direct support (DS) of a maneuver brigade, while the MLRS battery provided general support and reinforcing (GSR) fires. One of the 155mm battalions, the 2-5 FA, was detached to the division's 3rd Brigade, which was forward deployed to West Germany. The MLRS battery was the replacement for the 203mm self-propelled howitzer battalion previously assigned for the GSR mission. The target acquisition battery employed sound, flash and radar methods to locate and classify targets.
