UNITED STATES ARMY

2nd RANGER BATTALION  •  D-DAY ORGANIZATION
1944 Regulations

The Ranger infantry battalions of the wartime US Army had a unique organization, reflecting their role as elite special forces units: a headquarters company and six assault companies. The HQ company embodied the battalion headquarters, a signal platoon, and a supply and transportation section. The assault companies had a small headquarters section; two platoons, each consisting of an assualt squad and a light machine gun squad; and a special weapons squad with an antitank rocket launcher (bazooka) and a 60mm mortar. With 32 troops, the Ranger assault company was smaller that a standard infantry rifle platoon.
Guidons for companies of separate infantry battalions had a national flag blue field with the battalion number above and the company designation below the Infantry branch insignia, all in white.
