Parading the Colors

An Akula-class nuclear-propelled attack submarine of the Russian Navy, underway on the surface, is seen here flying the Russian naval ensign (the Andrew Flag) and the two-star appointment flag of a squadron/division commander. The latter is of the same pattern as used previously by the Soviet Navy, only the canton differing. This boat is probably a unit of the 24th Submarine Division of the Northern Fleet, whose commander is usually a rear admiral. However, an admiral of any rank holding a division command would fly the two-star appointment flag.
