NAVAL RANK FLAGS  •  1815-44

The naval rank flags introduced in 1815 for Norway and Sweden were based on the newly adopted common naval ensign. For admirals, blue disks were placed at the intersection of the cross according to rank. Commodores flew a triangular pennant, yellow over blue, with the red-white saltire cross as a canton. The senior officer's pennant was like the commissioning pennant, but with a blue-yellow saltire added ahead of the red-white one.
All these rank flags were abolished when Norway adopted a distinctive naval ensign in 1844 and new common rank flags were introduced for the Norwegian and Swedish navies.
