ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN

AIR FORCE FLAGS SINCE 1947

The Royal Pakistan Air Force was formed in 1947 following the partition of British India and the establishment of the Dominion of Pakistan. In 1956, when Pakistan became a republic, the prefix Royal was dropped. The PAF followed British tradition by adopting an air force ensign of the RAF pattern: sky blue with the national flag as a canton and the air force roundel in the fly. There are now two versions of this flag: one for outdoor display and one with green/white fringe for indoor display and parade use. The National Standard of the Air Force is a variant of the national flag with the Air Force badge in the upper hoist and green/white fringe. When the standard and the fringed ensign are carried together, the former is posted on the right, in the honor position. Air Defense Command is the Pakistan Air Force's senior operational command; its ensign replaces the roundel with the command badge.
The first rank flags for officers of air rank were based on the British system, but when new rank insignia were adopted, with stars denoting rank, the flags shown below were introduced. Some sources claim that the the Air Force Ensign is now used as the rank flag of an Air Chief Marshal, since only one officer of that rank serves on active duty at any given time, as Chief of ther Air Staff.
Flag Proportions: Pakistan Air Force flags are made in 2:3 proportions.
