Unit Guidons
The Combat Aviation Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division has an air cavalry attack/reconnaissance squadron, an aviation attack/reconnaissance battalion, an aviation general support battalion, an aviation assault battalion and an aviation support battalion. Up to 2017, the air cavalry attack/reconnaissance squadron was equipped with OH-58 light attack/reconnaissance helicopters, while the aviation attack/reconnaissance battalion is equipped with AH-64 attack helicopters and RQ-7 reconnaissance drones. The OH-58s are being withdrawn from service, however, and will be replaced with AH-64s. The general support aviation battalion is equipped with UH-60 (command group support), CH-47 (heavy lift) and HH-60 (medical evacuation) helicopters. The aviation assault battalion conducts airmobile operations with UH-60 helicopters. The flying units are supported by maintenance and forward support companies organic to the battalions, backed up by an aviation support battalion. The MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone aircraft is operated by a separate aviation company; operationally it would be controlled by the force (division or corps) headquarters.
