UNITED STATES ARMY
101st AIRBORNE DIVISION (AIR ASSAULT) • 2025 ORGANIZATION
ORGANIZATIONAL FLAGS & GUIDONS
Notes
The US Army is now reverting to a division-centric unit of action in place of the UEx brigade-centric unit of action. The reorganization of the 101st Airborne Division offers a preview of how this is likely to affect other divisions. The 101st's new mobile brigades each consist of three infantry battalions and a seperate multi-functional roconnaissance company employing advanced technology including drones. These separate recon companies are provisional units and have not yet been affiliated with a regiment The cavalry reconnaissance squadron and the brigade engineer battalion have been eliminated; the FA battalion and the brigade support battalions (now reorganized and redesignated as light support battalions or LSBs) have been placed under the DIVARTY (division artillery) headquarters and the division sustainment brigade respectively. The DIVARTY HQ also controls an air defense artillery battalion, and the division sustainment brigade controls a military police battalion. A signal battalion, a military Intelligence battalion and a divisional combat engineer battalion are administratively assigned to the sustainment brigade but are controlled by the division HQ. The division's combat avialtion brigade is essentially unchanged.
Divisions of the US Army and their subordinate headquarters are authorized distinctive organizational flags. For infantry divisions the flag is horizontally divided, scarlet over bational flag blue, with the division's shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) in proper colors centered. The divisional headquarters battalion has a similar flag, with the SSI centered on the scarlet stripe and the monogram HHBN centered on the blue stripe. For brigades of infantry divisions, the flag is vertically divided, scarlet and national flag blue, with the SSI over the brigade number or monogram. For division artillery the flag is scarlet with a horizontal yellow stripe and the SSI centered.Organizational flags for divisions, their headquarters battalions and their brigades are 3 feet at the hoist by 4 feet on the fly with 2 1/2-inch yellow fringe. They are made of heavyweight rayon banner cloth with the insignia and numerals or monograms applied to appear properly on both sides of the flag. Campaign and unit decoration streamers awarded to divisions are always displayed with these flags. Organizational flags are always carried or displayed with a National Color of the same material and dimensions.Guidons for headquarters elements of divisions are of the same design as the corresponding organizational flags. Dimensions are 20 inches at the hoist by 27 inches on the fly with a 10-inch fork. Older guidons made of cotton or wool bunting may still be used if serviceable, but new ones are made of heavyweight rayon banner cloth.Note: Active links in descriptions point to pages depicting the guidons of subordinate units.
