The 1st Brigade of the 3rd Armored Division was a balanced formation with two armored battalions (M1A1 tanks armed with a 120mm gun) and two mechanized infantry battalions (M2 IFVs). Cavalry units organized and equipped as heavy armored formations or mechanized infantry used the designations battalion and company in place of squadron and troop.
