REPUBLIC OF ECUADOR

CURRENT NAVAL FLAGS & PENNANTS

The Ecuadorian Navy (Armada del Ecuador) is a small force whose primary combatant units are two guided missile frigates, six guided missile corvettes, and two submarines. The frigates are British Leander-class ships, originally built for Chile and acquired from that country in 2008. The corvettes were built in Italy in the 1980s and were extensively modernized in 2006-19. The submarines were built in Germany in the late 1970s and have also undergone modernization. There are also two patrol vessels and three fast attack craft (missile) in service.

The state flag of Ecuador also serves as the naval ensign; the commissioning pennant is vertically striped in ther national colors. Rank flags for admirals are similar to those of the US Navy. The flags for full admirals and vice-admirals, though authorized, are not in use, since the highest-ranking flag officers on active duty are rear-admirals. A rear-admiral serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy flies the four-star flag with anchor; all others fly the two-star flag. The one-star flag is flown by a captain in command of a squadron or group; commanders and lieutenant-commanders in command fly a triangular pennant with one star. Sources disagree as the the design of the pennant for the senior officer prersent afloat, but it seems probable that a plain blue pennant is used as shown below. There are three flags for the Naval Academy. In addition to the one shown below a naval ensign with inscription below the coat of arms and a black standard with a small emblem are used.

Flag Proportions: Naval flags and pennants of Ecuador, excluding the commissioning pennant, have 2:3 proportions.
