FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

CURRENT MILITARY & NAVAL FLAGS & ENSIGNS

Nigeria achieved independence as a British dominion in 1960 and in 1963 the country became a republic. The current national flag was adopted in 1959; the naval and military flags  adopted from 1960 onward resemble their British equivalents. Originally the naval ensign was the British White Ensign with the national flag replacing the Union Jack; later this was replaced by the version shown below. The naval commissioning pennant is white with the national flag at the hoist. Some sources show the air force ensign with the service's green-white green roundel in place of the Air Force badge. Most of these flags are made in two versions: without fringe as shown and with gold fringe for ceremonial use and indoor display.
Flag Proportions: Naval and air force flags and the presidential flag have 1:2 proportions. Armed forces and army flags have approximate 2:3.5 proportions.
