As white minority
rule came to an end in 1994,
South Africa adopted a naval ensign
incorporating the provisional national flag that was to serve for five
years while a definitive design was agreed upon. In the event the
provisional design proved popular and it was confirmed as South Africa's
new national flag. The previous naval ensign was updated by replacing
the old SA national flag in the canton, deleting the naval badge in the
lower fly and changing the cross to the same shade of green as used for
the new national flag.
