86th ARMORED BRIGADE, 26th INFANTRY DIVISION
Cold War Organization  •  1988

The 86th Armored Brigade belonged to the Vermont Army National Guard and was assigned to the 26th Infantry Division. In peacetime it controlled only two armor battalions (M60A1 tanks armed with a 105mm gun) but upon mobilization it would probably have acquired the 1-101 Infantry, a mechanized infantry battalion (M113 APCs) of the Massachusetts Army National Guard whose peacetime higher headquarters was 3rd Brigade, 26th Infantry Division. Accordingly, I have chosen to show this battalion as a unit of the 86th Armored Brigade.

Infantry and armor battalions of the Army National Guard were mostly organized under the Army of Excellence (AoE) scheme with a headquarters company, three lettered maneuver companies and a combat support (CS) company.
