3rd BRIGADE (FORWARD), 2nd ARMORED DIVISION

The 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Armored Division, also known as 2nd Armored Division (Forward), was stationed at Garlstedt in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its peacetime higher headquarters was US Seventh Army and in the event of war it was earmarked, along with the balance of the division and the rest of US III Corps, for NATO's Northern Army Group (NORTHAG), the wartime designation of Headquarters, British Army of the Rhine.
The 3rd Brigade (Forward) was an armor-heavy formation with two armored battalions (M1A1 tanks armed with a 120mm gun) and one mechanized infantry battalion (M2 IFVs). Also attached were a field artillery battalion, an air cavalry troop with attack helicopters, an air defense artillery battalion, a combat engineer battalion, a military intelligence company, a military police platoon and a forward support company. All these units except for the MI company, were detached from their parent units in 2nd Armored Division.
