UNITED STATES ARMY

HHC 2nd ARMORED DIVISION  •  DIVISION BASE UNITS
Cold War Organization  •  1988

The 2nd Armored Division headquarters and staff were supported by the division headquarters company (HHC). The HHC commander was the headquarters commandant, responsible for establishing and supporting the the division command post.

The division base units were administratively assigned to the division support command (DISCOM). Tactically, however, they were controlled by the division headquarters and so I have chosen to show them here. The air defense artillery battalion had four batteries, two with self-propelled 20mm Vulcan antiaircraft guns and two with self-propelled Chaparral surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems. Each firing battery also had eighteen Redeye or Stinger shoulder-fired SAM systems. One Vulcan battery was with the division's 3rd Brigade, forward deployed to West Germany. The combat engineer battalion had three companies equipped with armored combat engineer vehicles and a bridging company. The latter, reconfigured as a composite company, was forward deployed with the 3rd Brigade. In addition to its four companies, the military intelligence battalion also had a separate long-range surveillance platoon and an aerial signals intelligence detachment.
